9:00 - 12:00 a.m.Statewide Early Literacy Networking Meeting — Lauri Morrison-Frichtl — Training and Technical Assistance Specialist in Early Childhood — Are you wondering what others are doing around the early literacy initiative? Does your program make a healthy connection between classroom and family literacy? This is a wonderful opportunity for Early Literacy Mentor Coaches and Family Literacy staff to come together, network, gather new ideas on promising practice and support your own professional development.

9:00 — 10:30 a.m.Supporting Infant/Toddler Staff: Credentials, Career Paths and Professional Development, Julia Delapp, Ounce of Prevention — Explore with your colleagues the professional development needs of infant/toddler staff and discuss the gaps in Illinois' current training and higher education system. Contribute to the development of a new statewide Infant Toddler Credential and an Early Childhood Career Lattice.

9:00 - 12:00 a.m.Infant and Toddler West Ed Training — Module III — Learning and Development — Diane King, Consultant for Infants and Toddlers Programming — This session will explore cognitive and language development in very young children. Com and discover how you can facilitate learning and support the children in your infant-toddler program. This presentation qualifies participants for CEU Credit

Fathers Matter Too! Series of Fatherhood Sessions (All of these sessions are repeated) — Rosetta Biggerstaff, Family and Community Development Coordinator, WADI — Funded with support from the Administration for Children and Families, Region V. At the close of each workshop the participants will receive an item for their "Fathers Matter Too!" tool belt.

9:00 - 10:30 a.m.Fathers Matter Too! Lessons Learned "Starting a Male Involvement Program" — Rosetta Biggerstaff, Family and Community Development Coordinator and member of Fathers Matter Too Training Team with WADI; Bill Wood Co-presenter — Attendees will be able to - identify "lessons learned" from beginning a male involvement program — understand the importance of the father figure in children's lives — identify ways to increase male involvement in their program.

Fathers Matter Too! Using Support Network — Renee Lovelette, Family specialist and member of Fathers Matter Too Training Team with WADI; Nancy Dixon Co-presenter — Participants will enhance their ability to maintain open relationships with members of their support network. Increase their understanding of the attitudes and feelings of people who are in their network. Identify effective ways to ask for help. Receive guidelines for balancing new and old relationships.

Illinois Facilities Fund — Rick Chapman, Representative — Low interest funds available at 5% fixed for up to 15 years to assist Head Start Organizations.

9:00 - 12:00 p.m.How to Deliver an Effective Presentation — George Haley, Program Manager, Springfield Urban League — This workshop is designed to encourage participants in developing their knowledge and skills toward delivering an effective presentation. The workshop will discuss ways to overcome fear, ways to set the stage for an effective presentation. Participants will learn how to develop effective opening and closing statement.

Illinois Oral Health Action Plan for Head Start/Early Head Start Children Orientation — Gennie Gilmore, Assistant Director, IDHS — Head Start Collaboration Office — This session will focus on orienting health staff to the Illinois Oral Health Action Plan for Head Start/Early Head Start children. Participants will receive an overview of the action plan and ideas of how they can use the strategies/suggestions "back home" in their community. Four key elements will be addressed.

10:30 - 12:00 p.m.Fathers Matter Too! Sensitivity — Toni Stehl, Family Specialist and member of Fathers Matter Too Training Team with WADI; Amanda Doan Co-presenter — Participants will increase their knowledge of how stereotyping is very powerful and dangerous because it can justify actions that restrict and exclude groups of people and limit their opportunities. Learn how everyone needs to be on board to have a successful male involvement program.

10:30 - 12:00 p.m.Fathers Matter Too! Domestic Violence — Nancy Dixon, Family Specialist and member of Fathers Matter Too Training Team with WADI; Renee Lovelette Co-presenter — Participants will increase their knowledge of domestic violence, their awareness of the impact of domestic violence on victims and children. Recognize that domestic violence is completely unacceptable. Participants will learn of strategies and resources for dealing with domestic violence.

Calm Down! Calm Down! Cheravon West, Prevention Partnership, Chicago; Shela West Co-presenter — In this workshop we will become skilled at calming ourselves and our environment consequently we become more beautiful, healthier and prosperous.

2:15 - 3:45 p.m.Reading is Fundamental! Where Kids and Books Come Together

Rachel Mellen, Child Care Collaboration Manager, T.C.O.C. — Presentation will focus on what RIF is, what running a RIF program involves, and how it can improve family literacy, parent involvement and community involvement.

School Readiness: What Do We Know About How Ready We Are? — Gennie Gilmore, Assistant Director, IDHS-Head Start State Collaboration Office; Kay Henderson, Division Administrator, ISBE-Early Childhood — This session is designed to give classroom staff and parents an overview of the school readiness studies that are being completed in the state of Illinois.

Who Knows Where the Money Goes? Dollar Per Child Campaign — Christie Banks, WADI; Stephanie Jackson-Rowe, CEDA; Donita Haynes, Riverbend; and Debra Shepard, SIU-E — IHSA Parent Board Members explain the Dollar Per Child Campaign, how to generate dollars and how the money is used. Sharing ideas and networking.

Introduction into Team Parenting — Amanda Doan, Head Start/Early Head Start Parent and member of Fathers Matter Too Training Team with WADI; Toni Stehl Co-presenter — Introduction to concept of team parenting and possibility of working well with others in the best interest of the child. Identify all the people who relate to them as a father/mother. Identify the impact of parental conflict on children. Understand the rights and responsibilities for unmarried parents raising children cooperatively.

Conflict Resolution/Anger Management — Bill Doan, Head Start/Early Head Start Parent, Chairperson of Policy Council, Fathers Matter Advisory member, Men in Action (M.I.A.) member, and member of Fathers Matter Too Training Team with WADI; Bill Wood Co-presenter — Participants will increase their knowledge of anger and conflict as normal aspects of relationships. Recognize that violence as a way of expressing anger is unacceptable, is usually illegal and has negative consequences. Identify sources of conflicts between them and other parent of their child. Explore their own anger styles and learn how to look for clues that will help them recognize their feelings of anger. Identify and practice ways of resolving conflicts and managing anger without violence.

Advocacy Session for Parents — Kahree Wahid, National Head Start Associate Government Affair Division - In this session you will learn about steps to take to advocate on Head Start and write letters to congress.

Health Services Network — Gennie Gilmore, Assistant Director IDHS-HSSCO; Lucy Chappee, Health Specialist, Riverbend Head Start; Shonna Rose, Health Coordinator, East Central Head Start — Participants will be given an opportunity to share both the challenges they are facing and the innovative strategies they are currently implementing. 3:00 — 5:00 p.m.Heads Up Reading: Discovering the Gateways to Early Literacy and Effective Ways — Kathy Ward-Cameron, Heads Up! Reading Coordinator, INCCRRA — In this interactive workshop we will discuss the five gateways to early literacy (talking, playing, reading, writing and learning the code) and how they are integrated into early childhood curriculum and assessment. Participants will discover how to use books in all areas of the classroom with children age infant through five years. The content from this workshop is an overview of the HeadsUp! Reading Program, an early literacy distance learning course for early childhood professionals and parents.

Are Children Behaving in Ways That Challenge You? Prevention and Intervention Strategies to Consider — Micki Ostrosky, Associate Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Graduate Students from SpEd 466: Letticia Alvarez, Sunny Huang, Ellie Kim, Angel Lee, Sonja Scheiger, — Young children's challenging behavior is a constant source of stress and worry for early educators and parents alike. The presenters for this session will highlight strategies to help prevent children from engaging in challenging behaviors and they will discuss ways to intervene when prevention strategies are not enough.

Will Preschool Children Eat Soy Foods?- Jan Endres, RD, Phd, Consultant and Southern Seven Head Start, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois; Merlene Sumner, Nutritionist, South Seven Head Start - Substituting soy foods for traditional foods at the Southern Seven Head Start Program showed that children liked soy foods. Only three of the 23 foods showed differences in quantity consumed. What are the implications for treating obesity?

Come share and support your family services colleagues! Participants will also develop a list of family success indicators/outcomes that can be used to publicize the great work Illinois Early/Head Start is doing with families.

8:30 — 10:00 a.m.Early Literacy - Using Best Practices — Barbara Becker, MA, Project Manager and Director, Uptown Head Start, Chicago — Uptown Head Start staff will present the theoretical basis for the current thinking on early literacy. The presentation will highlight the best practices that have been the hallmark of Head Start. There will be a review of Head Start Performance Indicators addressing early literacy, Family Literacy and Outcome Measurements. The second half of the workshop will focus on the actual development of playful and purposeful literacy activities for the Head Start classroom, for the home and for Interactive Parent Child Activities known as PACT

A Joy to be Fit — Exercise and Nutrition Workshop — Stephanie Jackson-Rowe, M.S., President Head Start Parent Component and Health Minister; Shirley Hill, Natural Food Hygienist Co-presenter — Wear your sweat suit, gym shoes, and bring a towel because this workshop promises to get you up and moving! Parents and staff will learn some alarming facts about obesity, how it is impacting the health of our children and families and what the Christian Aerobics and Fitness Association is doing to fight it!

HIV and AIDS Among Children We Must Stem the Tide

Azella C. Collins, MSN, RN, Administrator Illinois Perinatal Program, Illinois Department of Public Health — This presentation will focus on HIV and AIDS infection rates from birth to age five. The presentation will provide information of modes of transmission, fluids that transmit HIV, prevention strategies, and resource information will be provided to all participants in a notebook.

Advocacy Reauthorization Update - Gina Guillemette, Ounce of Prevention Kids PEPP- This presentation will provide the latest information on Head Start Reauthorization 2003 including key issues, time lines, and advocacy efforts needed.

Meeting the Challenges of Driver and Monitor Training

Kay Strand, Administrative and Support Services Manager, City of Rockford Head Start; Ruth Ann Ramey, Facilities and Transportation Director, Southern Seven Health Dept/Head Start - Session will address the challenges to compliance with Final Rule 45CFR 1310 and will provide suggestions and examples of training for drivers and monitors that will result in a high level of safety for children.

10:15 — 11:45 a.m.An Introduction For Staff to Mentoring in Collaboration Sites - Dorene L. Ewell, Childcare/Classroom Training Specialists, WADI Head Start/Early Head Start - When successful, mentoring is a growing and learning process for both the mentor and the protégé. There are differences between working with the Head Start staff and Collaboration staff.

Emotional Energy — Cheravon West, Prevention Partnership, Chicago; Shela West Co-presenter — In this skills workshop we will experiment with energy and learn how to use our energy to help us live healthier and more prosperous lives.

Early Head Start and Parents as Teachers: A Collaboration — Maurine Brennan, Early Education Coordinator, Academic Development Institute — Discussion of the use of Parents as Teachers model in an Early Head Start home-based setting. Learn about Parents as Teachers home visits, benefits of the curriculum, developmental screening and assessment. View kits used in the Early Head Start — Parents as Teachers collaboration.

Father Come Back To Your Child — Stephennie Segrest-Stuckey, Chair, Illinois Family Partnership Network (IFPN), Chicago; Robert Augusto, IFPN Father Come Back To Your Child; Jeffrey Scott, CEDA Head Start, 2002 National Father of The Year — IFPN and CEDA parent leaders will share the success of parent involvement and transitioning a Head Start father's success story, topic discussion and video presentation, brainstorming activities and much, much more!

Children Exposed to Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse —Denise McCaffrey, Prevention Resource Developer, Springfield Region, Prevent Child Abuse Illinois — This presentation will look at the developmental impact on children who are exposed to violence and/or substance abuse by caretakers in the home. We will also explore the connections between and how these different service systems are working to improve collaboration.

Collaboration with Head Start: The State of the State — Gina Ruther, Director, DHS Head Start State Collaboration Office — This session will provide participants with information regarding various collaborative efforts between Head Start and state entities in Illinois, as well as updates on statewide early childhood system building efforts.
