1 Research – Part 1 - What Does Current Research Say About Head Start?
Discover what current research is saying about Head Start. Some of it may surprise you! This presentation will discuss the Head Start Impact Study findings, highlight recent head Start research findings, provide a status report on the national Reporting System and the work of the National Research Council’s Committee on Developmental Outcomes and Assessments for Children Birth – Five. Learn what the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) findings say about Head Start and state-funded Pre-K programs.1. Research – Part 2 - Using Research to Create Public Reports
Head Start Reauthorization now requires local programs to develop and share public reports with local communities. Learn how to use local data and produce reports that meet the new requirements but more importantly portray Illinois Head Start as a quality, comprehensive program. In a climate of Preschool For All exemplary reporting is extremely important to our continued success.

Participants will sharpen their skills in observing how young children learn math and will develop math activities that are enjoyable for children and teachers. This engaging workshop will enable participants to review the foundations of mathematical knowledge, as described by the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework, Performance Standards and Illinois Learning Standards. We will explore our own attitudes and experiences with math and will identify classroom activities in English and Spanish that reinforce children’s understanding of math concepts.

Participants will discuss programs and tools that can be used in centers and homes to prevent early childhood caries. Funding sources for preventive oral health programs will be shared. Explore how you can develop community and health task forces that support oral health services.

Each day we create new stories that become the novel of our life. Right from the start, the stories we hear and experience transmit important cultural messages that help to shape who we are. Increase your awareness of the importance of play in children’s lives. Learn strategies to help fathers and father figures identify various techniques that will teach children through play, and expand their repertoire of activities to learn in day-to-day situations.C.2 Head Start Reauthorization: What You Need To Know About Serving Homeless Families
This session will focus on the new provisions in the “Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act of 2007”, that pertain to homeless children. We will discuss how these provisions impact Head Start programs in terms of identifications, enrollment and eligibility of homeless children for services. Participants will gain an understanding of how to identify and sensitively enroll homeless young children as well as how best to support families. Participants will also receive two new guides developed by “Opening Doors” that focus on early childhood.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about “Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act of 2007” and implications for Head Start programs. Building relationships with parents is as important as building relationships with children. Participants will have the opportunity to identify their communication and relationship building approach with families and how they can approach the difficult issues in a practical, constructive manner. Young children’s challenging behavior is a constant source of stress and worry for early educators. Learn strategies to help prevent children from engaging in challenging behaviors and techniques to intervene when prevention strategies are not enough.A.7 When You Take Mouse, Computer, and Keyboard to School: Technology in the Early Childhood Classroom
This workshop provides participants with an understanding of the importance of incorporating technology into the Head Start classroom. Learn ideas for integrating technology in a developmentally appropriate manner for all children, including those with differing abilities. Develop new ideas that support incorporating technology into the classroom.

B.2 Resetting the Plate
This session will focus on the overwhelming epidemic of childhood obesity. Discover new facts and experience the Color Me Healthy Curriculum and participate in physical activities that you can take back to your program to share with staff, children and families. Information from the “I Am Moving, I Am Learning” training will be incorporated into this training. Participants will be provided with recipes and home time activities to share with families. Community resources will be discussed along with information about the Community Garden project that Southern Seven is working on with the Egyptian School District.

C.3 Developing a Successful Fatherhood Program
Attendees will gain information and strategies to assist men/fathers with balancing responsibilities. Learn what it takes to develop a successful fatherhood program that creates a father friendly environment. A.8 Literacy in the Head Start Classroom and On Home Visits: Strategies to Support Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers
Literacy has an increased emphasis in the new Head Start Act. Participants will discuss typical literacy developmental skills for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Strategies for embedding skill development into routine activities will be shared. Discover adaptations that can be made to address the strengths and needs of young children. Don’t miss this session if you’re looking for ideas to enhance your literacy curricula.

Welfare reform has required family focused staff and their supervisors to help families achieve long-lasting changes in their lives. Head Start staff partner with families and support family goal development. But do staff set goals for themselves and/or their families? Maybe not! This workshop will provide the opportunity for you to think about what you want to do before you die. Participants will discuss setting bold goals, getting out of the comfort zone and making things happen. It is not enough to make goals. Explore barriers to meeting goals and strategies for achieving them. Opportunities for sharing with each other! Tri County Opportunities Council Head Start will share a very exciting goal they have planned for 2009.

Experience various assessment tools through demonstration and small group exploration. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect individually on their own assessment procedures and explore their current practice within this framework.A.2 1 – 2 – 3 – Math Is Easy
Learn the five different math concepts and how to teach math to children by using games. Participants will make a game for each of the five concepts. Don’t miss this fun, hands on opportunity to learn math concepts starting with number concepts all the way to graphing.
